Ministry of transport presents study of the development of mobility until 2050

The different economic and demographic developments in Germany during the following 10 years will have a long-term influence on the traffic. How and by how much are so far unanswered questions. Minister of transport Wolfgang Tiefensee has presented a report "mobility development 2050", that for the first time allows an evaluation of long-term tendencies of mobility considering demography, settlement systems and regional economy until 2050.

The car stays number one

"We expect the car to be the primary mode of transportation in Germany until 2050. Because many people will be travelling by car, the construction of streets will stay important. If the actual trend proceeds, the population will decline until 2050, but there won't be less cars", is Tiefensee's prognosis in Berlin today. "In addition to that the public transportation system has to be made efficient, especially in the periphery. This is one of the great transport policy challenges for Confederation, Laender, regions and communities that require realistic goals in the services of general interest and strict cost control. We have to design the transportation system of the future in such a way, that allows even old people to be on the go."

There is much to do

There have to be flexible offers, especially in the countryside. "Bus on call" is the minister's vision for the future. "Pick up and drop off services will gain importance. The offers have to be affordable and senior-friendly. Older people don't want to have to deal with buses, we have to offer them more security and comfort. On the other hand it is the policy's duty to build family-friendly cities and regions and attractive locations for qualified young people. Buses and trains in the cities have to be safe and accessible enough for us to let our children use them worry-free.

The right mix of accuracy, reliability and security will pay off. In addition, we have to build safe bicycle paths and boardwalks for our children. The results of the report provide us with new knowledge concerning the medium- and long-term need for action in the transportation and urban development sectors. The policy will have to find new solutions and provide results for regions with expanding traffic."
