Passenger TV hits the mark

Fahrgastfernsehen

For sleepy passengers on their way to work or tired passengers on their return home from work, reading a book or the newspaper sometimes just doesn't provide the best kind of amusement. Background noises make it hard to concentrate and holding a book while standing in a crowded subway car can be very challenging at times. Passenger TV such as the "Berliner Fenster" (Berlin window) in Berlin meets passengers' needs just perfectly: it's entertaining, informative, soundless - an inconspicuous advertising medium that gets a lot of attention and exposure.

Advertise with a likeable medium

The program is broadcast without sound. This leads to a greater level of acceptance amongst passengers, says Andreas Orth, CEO of the "Berliner Fenster". A survey shows that more than 80% of the passengers rate the program "good" or "very good", the percentage being even higher among younger passengers.

About 1.5 million viewers use public TV every day. Due to the average ride time of 11 minutes, the program of the "Berliner Fenster" is organized in 15-minute program loops, which are updated a couple of times per day. The program is broadcasted in more than 1100 subway traincars. It consists of news, reports, information and advertising and gets support in the news sector by popular daily papers and the news channel n.tv. Passenger TV therefore reaches many different target groups. Filmlet festivals like the annual "Going Underground" further increase its popularity.

Technical progress has made passenger TV easier to use. Berlin, Hannover and Leipzig are pioneers in this sector. Many other cities are still flirting with passenger TV. Producing a spot is easy and not very pricy. It is broadcast exactly when the customer chooses, and in 2-hour time intervals. Discounts are granted for all cultural events.
